How Chiropractic can help with Sciatica.
Sciatica is a symptom of sciatic nerve irritation, which is usually characterized as pain down the back of the leg (i.e. along the sciatic nerve). However, sciatica can also produce other sensations, such as numbness, tingling, pins and needles and muscle weakness.
There are several possible causes of sciatica. These include spinal joint misalignments, muscle tightness (such as piriformis syndrome), spinal facet joint injury, degenerative discs or bulging or herniated intervertebral disc.
At Total Care Chiropractic, your Chiropractor will do some spinal screening, orthopaedic and neurological testing to assess the cause of the sciatica, determine whether there is any nerve damage, and decide the best form of treatment for your sciatica.
Muscles around the low back and buttock can develop trigger points that also cause referred pain symptoms similar to sciatica. Our Chiropractors commonly release these with very good results. Likewise, if the problem is a spinal misalignment that is referring pain into the leg, this is treated with Chiropractic adjustments, usually with excellent outcomes.
All patients at Total Care Chiropractic receive a 10 minute massage prior to Chiropractic treatment which, when combined, we find very beneficial in alleviating sciatic symptoms.
